Blind DJ Reads Text, Recognizes Faces, Using OrCam MyEye - OrCam

Fitzville Martin, 42, was born with retinitis pigmentosa. He has been blind since birth. Fitzville, like many who are blind or visually impaired, struggled to be independent. But that didn’t stop him from living his life. “I live in peace with my eye problem and if it gets better or worse, I live in peace with it.” Fitzville’s positive attitude has given him the strength to continue to follow his dreams. With the help of the world’s most advanced wearable assistive device for the blind and visually impaired, he has even been able to live and work independently of assistance from others.

He currently has his own recording studio, Will Power Entertainment, in Brooklyn, New York. He is very passionate about music and loves creating it. Fitzville began working with a lot of the bigger names for free, just to garner the knowledge of the business. He sat with people for Toni Braxton, Sean Paul, Mr. Vegas. It took him a lot of time to gain the trust of and work with different artists. Fitzville remains very positive, always pushing people to go after their passions, no matter the obstacles. “If you have any kind of passions, I’m gonna try to see what your passion is. If you can develop whatever it is you’re passionate about, I’m gonna give you that advice to go ahead and develop that.”

Discovering OrCam MyEye 2

Wearable assistive equipment for blind and visually impaired

He eventually came upon OrCam MyEye 2, after hearing about it through word of mouth within the blind and visually impaired community. OrCam MyEye 2 is the world’s most advanced wearable assistive device for people who are blind or visually impaired. Describing the device, Fitzville said, “The thing that I constantly hear is this is technology – this is technology right here, but this makes them feel like, OK, technology is actually doing something spectacular…”

OrCam MyEye 2 gave Fitzville more independence than he’s ever had before. “My God, what went through my head the first time I put on OrCam glasses is, they’re not gonna be able to hold me now!” OrCam MyEye 2 has vastly improved Fitzville’s quality of life. It allows him to “do everything that I need, when I want, when I need to do it. “Now I can just go in my bag and I organize my papers. I can read my mail. I can see how much money this is.” In addition to reading text and identifying money notes, OrCam MyEye 2 recognizes faces, identifies products, barcodes, colors, and more. Fitzville no longer has to worry about overpaying cab drivers. He also uses OrCam MyEye 2 to identify faders, buttons, equipment I/O, and other studio related equipment.

OrCam MyEye 2 is easy-to-use and intuitive, being controlled either with gestures or the tap of a button. Fitzville said of the device’s ease of use, “Two buttons. It’s not a combination of pressing this and pressing that and pressing this and pressing that – it’s two buttons.”

“You know, the other day it made my professor feel real good, you know why? It says there’s a young man in front of you and he’s an older dude.”
